Stock Market Today Live, Sept 8: Sensex falls 325 points, Nifty slips below 23,700 as US-Iran tensions, crude weigh

ensex Today, Nifty 50 | Stock Market Live Updates – Find here all the live updates related to Sensex, Nifty, BSE, NSE, share prices and Indian stock markets for 8th September 2026.

Indian equity markets opened on a weak note on Tuesday, with elevated crude oil prices, persistent US-Iran tensions and mixed global cues keeping investors cautious.

At 9.16 am, the Sensex was down 325.41 points, or 0.43%, at 75,807.40, after opening at 75,970.28 against Monday’s close of 76,132.81. The Nifty 50 fell 91.60 points, or 0.39%, to 23,687.55.

Brent crude has climbed to around $97 a barrel, breaking above a range it had held for four sessions, amid concerns over prolonged supply disruptions linked to tanker attacks and risks around the Strait of Hormuz. OPEC+ has kept output unchanged, leaving limited additional supply buffers.

Asian markets are mixed, with Japan’s Nikkei largely flat and South Korea’s Kospi gaining over 0.5%. Analysts expect domestic markets to remain under pressure in the absence of strong local triggers.

Technically, the Nifty has formed a bearish candle with a lower high and lower low, indicating continuation of the corrective decline. Sustaining below 24,025 could trigger further downside towards 23,600-23,500, while 24,150 remains the immediate resistance level.

Important pointers for today’s trade

  • * Market opening: GIFT Nifty signals a flat-to-negative start.

    * Crude oil: Brent near $97 a barrel is the key pressure point.

    * Geopolitical risk: US-Iran tensions and uncertainty around the Strait of Hormuz remain critical.

    * Global cues: Asian markets are mixed; Nikkei is largely flat while Kospi is up over 0.5%.

    * Nifty trend: Daily chart shows a bearish candle with a lower high and lower low, indicating continued corrective weakness.

    * Key support: 24,025 is crucial; sustained trade below this level could open downside towards 23,600-23,500.

    * Immediate resistance: 24,150; a move above this level could signal a pause in the downtrend.

    * Domestic triggers: Lack of strong domestic triggers may keep the market under pressure.

    * Key factors to watch: Crude prices, US-Iran developments, Strait of Hormuz situation and the outlook for US monetary policy.

Bitcoin near $80,000; CoinSwitch, Mudrex see key levels and macro cues in focus

      CoinSwitch

BTC is trading near “$79K-$80K after shifting U.S. interest-rate expectations and geopolitical tensions. BTC briefly moved above $80K as Treasury yields eased, helping improve sentiment across risk assets. However, a stronger-than-expected U.S. jobs report pushed bond yields higher again, sending BTC back below $80K. For now, $80K remains the key level to watch. If BTC can hold and build support above this level, the next major resistance sits near $82.8K with a potential move toward $90K if macro conditions turn more supportive”, said CoinSwitch Markets Desk.

      Mudrex

“Bitcoin is holding around $79,000 despite rising Middle East tensions pushing oil above $92 a barrel and reviving inflation concerns ahead of the FOMC meeting. CryptoQuant’s spot apparent-demand metric and Coinbase Premium Index have turned negative, signaling weaker retail buying. Yet BTC has shown strong resilience even as the yen gained 3.7% in just three sessions. A similar yen move in 2024 triggered a 20% Bitcoin selloff, making the current price action a sign of underlying strength. For now, Bitcoin needs to reclaim $80,000 to regain momentum, with $78,400 as key support”, said Prateek Gupta, Head of Business, Mudrex.

US labour market: More jobs add excitement to upcoming FOMC meeting

US payrolls increased by 162,000 in August, driven by seasonal factors, indicating a robust underlying labour market. Job gains broadened across industries, with prior data having been revised upwards and unemployment holding at 4.1%. This stronger report has increased uncertainty ahead of the Fed’s September meeting, strengthening the focus on upcoming inflation data.

US job growth in August came as a massive surprise, as the economy added 162,000 jobs, adjusted for seasonal factors. The unusually low seasonal adjustment this year compared to August 2025 almost entirely explains the large positive surprise. According to initial estimates, seasonality boosted job growth in August 2025 by 178,000, whereas the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) assumed that seasonality had only added 8,000 jobs this year. The result is fairly high job growth, adjusted for seasonal factors. Aside from these statistical technicalities, the underlying trend of the August job reports was quite robust. The drop in payrolls in July was revised to a moderate increase of +21,000, bringing the net two-month revision to +55,000. The proportion of industries adding jobs increased to 55.6%, with cyclical industries, such as construction and manufacturing, adding jobs, while the unemployment rate remained at 4.1%. An alternative measure of labour market slack also points to a low unemployment rate. The solid labour market report has generated considerable excitement in anticipation of the forthcoming FOMC meeting on 16 September. With only 12 days to go, the probabilities implied by Fed Funds futures pricing have shifted to 40% for no change and 60% for a 25-basis-point hike. Prior to the labour market report and following dovish remarks by Fed Governor Waller on 3 September, the implied probabilities were 50-50. As the Fed is much more concerned about inflation than the labour market, we will pay close attention to the August inflation report on 11 September, which will be released before the FOMC meeting that will determine the course of US monetary policy. We expect the inflation trend excluding energy to decline, enabling the Fed to hold rates unchanged once more. However, any positive surprise in next week’s inflation reading would significantly increase the odds of a rate hike and necessitate a revision of our projection of an unchanged policy rate in the US.
